Who needs an IT audit
Most of a company’s figures now live in its systems. If access is too wide, changes are not controlled or backups are not tested, errors and fraud can go unnoticed and data can be lost.
An IT audit gives management and the board an independent view of whether system controls work. It is most useful after a change, such as a new ERP, or where a few people run all of IT.
What we do
The review covers the systems that hold your business and financial data. The work comes in six parts.
User access review
We check who can log in, what each role can do and how leavers are removed.
System security
We review passwords, administrator rights and other basic security settings.
Change controls
We test how changes to systems are requested, approved, tested and released.
ERP and accounting controls
We review approvals, segregation of duties and checks built into your finance system.
Backup and recovery
We check that data is backed up and that restoring it has been tested.
Report with risks and fixes
Findings ranked by risk, with fixes and owners agreed with you.

Common questions about it systems audit

What is an IT audit?
An IT audit is an independent review of the controls around a company’s systems. It checks who has access, how changes are approved, whether the finance system has the right built-in checks, and whether data can be restored after a failure. The result is a report on the risks found and how to fix them.
How is an IT audit different from a cybersecurity audit?
An IT audit looks at the controls over the systems that hold business and financial data: access, changes, backups and ERP settings. A cybersecurity review goes deeper into defences against attack, such as testing networks for weaknesses. The two overlap on access and security. Tell us which you need and we confirm the scope.
Why should an ERP system be audited?
An ERP system runs purchasing, sales, payroll and the accounts in one place, so a weak setting can affect many figures at once. Users may hold access they no longer need, or one person may be able to both create and approve a payment. An audit finds these gaps before they cause errors or losses.
How often should a company have an IT audit?
There is no single rule for most companies. A review is most useful after a big change, such as a new ERP, a move to the cloud or a change of IT provider, and then at regular intervals set by your risks. We agree the timing with you, often as part of the internal audit plan.
Does the external auditor check our IT controls?
Your external auditor looks at IT controls only as far as they affect the figures in the financial statements. An IT audit goes wider. It covers access, changes, security and backup across your main systems, and gives management a report on the systems themselves, with risks ranked and fixes agreed.
