Small and medium companies

What small companies in Qatar usually deal with

Most owners we speak to are running the business and the finances at the same time. These are the issues that come up most.

  • Books kept late

One person, or a part-time accountant, keeps the books, and they fall behind when the business is busy.

  • A rush every spring

The yearly accounts, the audit and the tax return all land at once, close to the deadline.

  • Tax returns with nothing to pay

Qatari-owned companies often think no return is due. Companies with no tax to pay still file one.

  • Accounts for the bank

A bank, Qatar Development Bank or a tender asks for audited or reviewed accounts at short notice.

  • The cost of a full-time accountant

Hiring one is more than the company needs, but the work still has to be done properly.

  • Not knowing what applies

Owners are unsure which filings, audits and deadlines apply to their type of company.

LLC and WLL companies

What an LLC or WLL usually needs each year

Most small companies in Qatar are limited liability companies, often called LLCs or WLLs. Each year they prepare financial statements, file a corporate income tax return on Dhareeba and keep proper books.

A mainland LLC has a company-law duty to appoint an auditor each year. Tax-return requirements are a separate question and also depend on ownership and residence. Tell us your company type, ownership, capital and year end so we can check both obligations.

  • Financial statements at year end

Questions

Questions small companies ask us

Short answers. Open a question to read the answer.

Does a small LLC or WLL in Qatar need an audit?

Usually, yes. The Commercial Companies Law says a limited liability company appoints one or more auditors at its general assembly every year. In addition, the General Tax Authority’s rules require audited accounts with the tax return above set limits on capital and income, and banks, Qatar Development Bank and tenders often ask for them. Tell us about your company and we confirm what applies.

Can you keep our books and also audit our accounts?

Not for the same accounts. An auditor cannot audit financial statements it prepared, because the audit must be independent. We can keep your books and prepare the accounts, and another auditor audits them, or we audit accounts prepared by someone else. We tell you which arrangement fits before we start.

Do I need audited accounts for a bank or QDB loan?

Lenders usually ask for recent financial statements, and many ask for audited ones, especially for larger amounts. The requirement differs between banks and programmes, so ask your lender which format it needs. We then prepare the accounts and support the audit or review it asks for.

What does a small company in Qatar have to do each year?

Four things for most companies: keep proper books through the year, prepare financial statements at year end, have them audited where the rules require it, and file the corporate income tax return on Dhareeba within four months of the year end, even when no tax is due. Changes to ownership, activity or address are reported to the General Tax Authority within 30 days.

How can we avoid a rush before the tax deadline?

Close the books every month instead of once a year. If the bank and supplier accounts are reconciled monthly, the year-end accounts can be ready soon after the year closes, leaving time for the audit before the return is due: 30 April for a December year end. Book the audit early and agree the timetable in writing. We plan the year with you.
