What it is

Who uses budgeting and forecasting

A budget sets out what the business plans to earn and spend in the year. A forecast shows where the year is heading on current figures.

Owners use them to plan hiring, stock and investment. Boards, banks and investors use them to judge whether the plan is on track.

Questions

Common questions about budgeting and forecasting

Answers about the service, the work involved and what to prepare. Open a question to read more.

What is the difference between a budget and a forecast?

A budget is the plan for the year: the income, costs and cash the business expects, agreed before the year starts. A forecast is an updated estimate of where the year will end, based on actual results so far. The budget stays fixed as the target; the forecast changes as conditions change.

What is a rolling forecast?

A rolling forecast is updated at regular points during the year and always looks the same distance ahead, so the outlook moves forward with time. Instead of waiting for next year’s budget, you see expected income, costs and cash on current figures. We agree with you how often it is updated and how far ahead it looks.

Why does a business need a cash flow forecast?

A profitable business can still run short of cash if customers pay late or large payments fall in the same month. A cash flow forecast shows the money expected in and out over the coming months, so you can see a shortfall early and plan for it, for example by agreeing payment terms or arranging finance in time.

What is a budget against actual report?

It compares what the business actually earned and spent with what the budget planned, line by line, and shows the difference. Large differences are explained, so owners and boards can see which costs are running over and which income is behind. It turns the budget into a tool for running the business, not just a yearly document.

Do small businesses need a budget?

Yes. A simple budget and cash flow forecast help any business, not only large companies. They show whether planned sales cover the costs, when cash will be tight and how much room there is to hire or invest. Banks and investors often ask for them too. We keep the format as simple as your business allows.
