What it is

Who needs a business valuation

Owners selling a company or a stake, buyers checking a price, and partners agreeing what a share is worth when one of them leaves. The value also matters in disputes and for some financial reporting.

The purpose shapes the work. A value for a sale looks different from a value for a court or for the accounts, so we agree the purpose and the reader before we start.

Our service

What we do

We value the business with the methods that fit it, then explain how we reached the figure.

  • Company valuation

The value of the whole business, for a sale, purchase or reporting.

  • Share valuation

The value of a stake, for example when a partner joins or leaves.

  • Discounted cash flow

Value based on the cash the business is expected to generate.

  • Market comparison

Value compared with similar companies and deals where data exists.

  • Net assets

Value based on what the business owns less what it owes.

  • Valuation report

A written report setting out the method, assumptions and conclusion.

We do not provide valuation consultancy to companies whose financial statements we audit. We check conflicts and the report’s intended use before accepting the engagement.

Questions

Common questions about business valuation

Answers about the service, the work involved and what to prepare. Open a question to read more.

How much is my business worth?

It depends on the cash the business can generate, the risks it faces, what similar companies have sold for and what it owns and owes. There is no single figure for every purpose: a value for a sale may differ from one for a partner exit. A valuation report sets out the range and the reasoning.

How do you value a company?

Usually with more than one method: discounted cash flow, comparison with similar companies or deals, and net assets. The right mix depends on the business and why the value is needed, for example a sale, a partner leaving or a dispute. The report explains the method and the assumptions, so a buyer, partner or court can test the figure.

What is a business valuation report?

It is a written document that states the value of a company or its shares at a given date. It explains the purpose, the information used, the methods applied and the main assumptions, and shows how the conclusion was reached. Buyers, partners, banks and courts use it to understand and test the figure.

When do you need a business valuation?

Usually when ownership changes or money depends on the value. Common cases are selling or buying a company, a partner joining or leaving, a dispute between shareholders, raising investment and financial reporting that needs a fair value. Some owners also value their business regularly to plan a future sale.

What is the discounted cash flow method?

Discounted cash flow values a business by forecasting the cash it will generate in future and converting that cash into a value today. The conversion reflects the risk of the business: the riskier the cash flow, the lower its value today. The result depends heavily on the forecast, so the assumptions need testing.

How is a partner’s share valued when they leave?

First check the partnership or shareholders’ agreement and the company’s articles, as they may set a method or a process. If they do not, the partners usually agree on an independent valuation of the company, then apply the leaving partner’s share. Questions such as discounts for a minority stake should be agreed upfront.
