Frequently asked questions

Short answers to the questions companies in Qatar ask about audit, tax, accounting, advice and setting up or closing a company. Each service page has more detail.

General questions

Which service does my company need?

It depends on what is due and who is asking. Most companies need monthly bookkeeping, a yearly audit and a yearly corporate income tax return, and some need advice or company services as well. Tell us about your company and what you have been asked for, and we suggest where to start.

What is the difference between an accounting firm and an auditing company?

An accounting firm keeps the books and prepares the accounts; an auditing company examines those accounts and gives an independent opinion on them. Many accounting and auditing firms in Qatar offer both, but never to the same company for the same accounts: the auditor cannot be someone who helped prepare them. Audit work also depends on the registrations required for your company.

Does my company in Qatar need an audit?

Most companies in Qatar need their yearly financial statements audited. The audited accounts are used for the tax return, for the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and by banks. The exact rule depends on your company type and where it is registered: the mainland, the QFC or a free zone. Tell us your company type and we confirm what applies to you.

Can you keep our books every month?

Yes. We record your daily transactions, reconcile your bank, customer and supplier accounts and close the books each month, so the records are ready for the audit and the tax return. Tell us roughly how many transactions you have a month, and we send a written proposal with a fixed fee.

Can you help with our corporate income tax return?

Yes. We prepare the yearly corporate income tax return from your accounts and support you through filing on the General Tax Authority’s Dhareeba portal. Companies file a return even when no tax is due, including companies owned by Qatari or GCC nationals. We also help with Dhareeba registration and withholding tax.

Can you help us set up a company in Qatar?

Yes. We help you choose a registration route and legal form, reserve the trade name, prepare the registration documents and apply for the licences your activity needs. The steps differ between mainland, QFC and free zone companies. Bookkeeping and tax registration support can be included in the agreed scope.

How much do your services cost?

It depends on the work and the size of your company. We look at what you need first and then give you a fixed fee in a written proposal, so you know the cost before any work starts. A short description of your company is enough to begin.

Do you work with companies in the QFC and free zones?

Yes. Companies in the Qatar Financial Centre and the free zones follow their own rules for registration, accounts and audit. We check which rules apply to your company and plan the work around them.

What is the difference between an audit and a review of financial statements?

An audit gives an independent opinion on whether the financial statements are fairly presented, based on detailed testing. A review under ISRE 2400 is based mainly on enquiry and analysis, so it involves less work and costs less. Lenders and owners who do not need a full audit sometimes accept a review.

What is a special purpose audit?

It is an audit of one specific thing rather than the whole financial statements: a project, a grant, a fund or a contract. The funder, bank or authority usually sets the format of the report. Send us their request and we confirm the scope and the work involved.

Can we outsource internal audit?

Yes. Many companies do not have a full internal audit team. We can run the whole function, building a plan around your main risks and reporting to management or the audit committee, or support your own team on specific areas.

What documents are needed for an audit in Qatar?

Usually the trial balance and draft financial statements, last year’s audited accounts, bank statements and confirmations, key contracts and the fixed asset register. We send a full list with the proposal, so nothing comes as a surprise during fieldwork. Books that are reconciled every month make the audit quicker for everyone.

What is the difference between internal and external audit?

An external audit gives an independent opinion on the yearly financial statements for readers outside the company, such as shareholders, banks and the tax authority. An internal audit works for management during the year, finding and fixing weaknesses in processes and controls. Many companies have both; tell us what you need and we suggest where to start.

How do I choose an auditor in Qatar?

When you compare audit firms or auditing companies in Doha, start by checking the auditor is entered in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry’s register, which Law No. 8 of 2020 requires before anyone practises auditing in Qatar. Then ask who will sign the report, what the fixed fee covers and the timetable. Check independence too: the firm should not have prepared the accounts it audits. Listed and QFC companies also need auditors on their own registers.

Which taxes does a company in Qatar usually deal with?

Common obligations include corporate income tax returns and withholding tax on certain non-resident payments. Your activities may also bring capital gains or excise tax requirements. Groups should check transfer pricing and, for large multinational groups, minimum tax rules. QFC companies have a separate framework. We start with your registration, activities and ownership to identify what applies.

What is the difference between corporate income tax and withholding tax?

Corporate income tax is charged on the company’s own taxable income, at 10% for most activities, and is reported in a yearly return. Withholding tax is 5% held back from certain payments to non-residents, such as fees for services, royalties, interest and commissions, and paid to the General Tax Authority before the 16th day of the following month. A company can owe both.

Do companies that pay no tax still file a return?

Yes. A company that benefits from an exemption, including the share of profit owned by Qatari and GCC nationals, still files its yearly return. An exempt company that does not file faces a penalty, so the return matters even when no tax is due.

Do I need a tax adviser or only help with the return?

It depends on what is changing in your business. If your activities and contracts stay the same each year, help preparing the return and the monthly withholding tax may be enough. New contracts, payments abroad, deals with group companies or plans to restructure are when a business tax consultant adds most value, because the tax effect is easier to manage before you commit. When you speak to tax consultants in Doha, ask whether they will only prepare figures or act for you before the GTA as a registered tax agent. We tell you which you need.

Do Qatar’s global minimum tax rules affect our group?

They can affect entities in multinational groups with consolidated revenue of at least EUR 750 million in at least two of the four preceding fiscal years. Qatar’s rules apply for fiscal years beginning on or after 1 January 2025 and aim for a 15% minimum effective tax rate. This is a separate assessment alongside ordinary corporate income tax.

Which tax services can you coordinate for us?

We help with Dhareeba registration, corporate income tax return preparation and filing support, withholding tax reviews, tax advice and transfer pricing documentation. We also review invoicing processes for e-invoicing preparation. Tell us about your activities and any GTA notices so we can agree the scope, responsibilities and any specialist support needed.

Accounting and financial reporting

Can we outsource bookkeeping instead of hiring an accountant?

Yes. Many small and growing companies in Qatar outsource their bookkeeping. We record transactions, reconcile the bank and suppliers and close each month, so you get reliable figures without a full-time hire. You keep access to the system and the records at all times.

Do we need to prepare our accounts under IFRS?

Many companies in Qatar prepare their financial statements under International Financial Reporting Standards, and auditors and lenders usually expect them. Which framework applies depends on your company type and who reads the accounts, so we confirm it before any conversion work starts.

How often should the books be reconciled?

At least monthly. A monthly bank and supplier reconciliation and close catches errors early, gives you up-to-date figures and saves a lot of work at year end, when the auditor and the tax return need the final numbers. Customer accounts and petty cash are worth checking on the same monthly cycle.

Which accounting system should we use?

It depends on the size of the business, the number of transactions, whether you need inventory or projects, and your budget. We compare a few suitable options, set up the chart of accounts and reports, move your old data and train your team.

Can you help if our books are behind?

Yes. We start with a catch-up: entering missing transactions, reconciling the bank and suppliers and correcting balances, then move to a regular monthly close. We agree the catch-up period and a fixed fee in writing before we start, and tell you early if a missing document will hold up the audit or the tax return.

What does a financial advisory firm do?

It helps owners and investors make financial decisions with evidence: what a business is worth, whether a deal or project makes sense, where the risks are and how to fix weak controls. The work ends in a written report with findings and recommendations you can act on.

What is the difference between due diligence and a valuation?

Due diligence checks the facts behind a deal: whether profits are real, what debts and liabilities exist and what could change the price. A valuation estimates what the company or its shares are worth. Buyers often need both, and the due diligence findings feed into the valuation.

What is the difference between a feasibility study and a business plan?

A feasibility study asks whether a project should go ahead at all, by testing the market, costs and returns. A business plan assumes the decision is made and sets out how the business will run and grow. Many owners commission a study first, then turn its findings into a business plan.

Which advisory service do I need to buy or sell a business?

Usually more than one, in a set order. A buyer needs financial due diligence to check the figures and a valuation to support the price, and an adviser can coordinate the deal and the lawyers. A seller benefits from clean accounts and a valuation before talking to buyers. Tell us which side you are on and how far the deal has gone, and we suggest where to start.

When should a business consider restructuring?

When cash is tight, losses repeat or debts are hard to pay on time. Acting early gives more options: cutting costs, changing the business model or agreeing new terms with banks. We start with a review of performance and cash, then propose a plan.

What is the difference between a mainland, QFC and free zone company?

They are registered with different authorities and follow different rules. Mainland companies register with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, QFC companies with the Qatar Financial Centre and free zone companies with the Qatar Free Zones Authority. The right choice depends on your activity, ownership and customers; we compare them for your case.

What documents do I need to set up a company in Qatar?

Usually passport copies of the owners and managers, the proposed trade names, the planned activity and an address for the company. Foreign corporate owners also need their company documents, often attested. The exact list depends on the legal form and the authority, so we give you a checklist at the start.

How long does it take to set up a company in Qatar?

It depends on the legal form, the activity and how quickly approvals and documents come through. Some activities need extra approvals from other ministries. We give you a timetable for your case in the proposal rather than a general promise.

Do I need to register for tax after setting up a company?

Tax registration must be checked as part of setup, even if the company expects to pay no tax. Mainland companies generally register with the GTA through Dhareeba. QFC companies follow a separate tax framework, and free zone obligations need checking for the entity concerned. We confirm the authority and applications before agreeing the work.

What do your corporate services cover?

We support company formation and closure. For setup, we help compare routes, reserve a name and prepare registration and licence applications. For closure, we support the appointed liquidator and prepare final accounts. The exact steps depend on the entity and authority. Tell us what you need so we can agree the responsibilities, documents and fee.
